Efficacy and safety of cinnamon in treating diabetes

Essay Instructions:

My teacher provided the class with the guidelines for this assignment, but I am going to make it easier by describing it to you. First, before you start this Assignment my teacher required me to provide her a tentative research question and a thesis statement. The thesis should be summarized in a couple of sentences. She also pointed out that the Thesis should be debatable. This is something that I am required to hand in 3 days. So this is the first part of this assignment and it is really short and easy. The second part, I am required to include 6 to 8 resources for this assignment which is the complete essay. Resources could be like film reviews, academic articles, essays, chapters, etc. on the film God on Trial. The film is a primary source, so it does not count from the 6 to 8 resources. The Third part, I have to hand in annotated bibliography with my essay draft: MLA format The fourth part, I have to include in my research paper the same bibliography but written in 3 different formats which are: MLA, APA, and Chicago format. THIS IS SEPARATE from the annotated bibliography. The fifth part, the paper should be about how does the movie God on Trial depict freewill. Make sure to use specific details in the film, lines, scenes, etc. Try to stay away from simply plot development and look at casting, costuming, lightning, music, camera shots( where does the camera position you the viewer, and what does that mean; in God on Trial for instance does the camera make you another one of the prisoners putting God on trial ?) Please if you have any questions let me know.

Efficacy and safety of cinnamon in treating diabetes
Subjective
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that has increased morbidity and mortality globally, and doctors now emphasis that alternative and complementary medicine could be effective in managing the disease other that use of conventional medicine. According to Hermitt, a Yahoo news contributor, use of cinnamon is supposedly able to cure many diseases and is hence dubbed a miracle cure. Cinnamon is regarded as a medical cure for various illnesses including cancers and is now advertised as a cure for type 2 diabetes (Hermitt).
The author quotes, studies which show that cinnamon is able to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. However the American Diabetes Association states that cinnamon should not replace other medications or lead to living unhealthily based on the idea of a miracle cure (Hermitt). The choice of this supplement is relevant as cinnamon is readily available, and many claims have been made that it is a miracle cure. This paper looks into the efficacy and safety of treating diabetes using cinnamon.
Objective
Dietary supplements are a form of Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) therapy, and there regulation falls under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and not the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A nutritional supplement is an ingredient taken orally and meant to supplement the dietary intake. Thus, use of herbs and other plant-based products including cinnamon constitute nutritional supplements so long as they supplement the diet. The use of Cinnamon as a medicinal ingredient has well been established and includes ceylon and cassia cinnamon. Since nutritional supplements have different regulations not found under the FDA, there is no need to contact the FDA in marketing the products. Similarly, the FDA may only get involved when a nutritional supplement is unsafe.
Researchers have yet to find the specific compound that helps to manage diabetes, but it is likely that Cinnamon polyphenols, which imitate insulin properties in cell bodies, treat diabetes. Cinnamon helps to lower the blood sugar level and the properties of cinnamon help in absorbing sugar. Nonetheless, there is a risk that use of medications and cinnamon together may lead to low blood sugar levels. Through use of cinnamon insulin becomes more efficient as there is increased insulin sensitivity. At the same time, cinnamon affects transporter proteins that eventually lead to carrying glucose into the cells from the blood cells. However, there are few regulations on the use of supplements, and there is a need to investigate the possible risks of using cinnamon.
Effects of lowering blood sugar levels vary from one person to another, and it is difficult to assess what amount of dosage is necessary for every patient. In spite of many benefits to patients, cinnamon has risks. It helps blood thinning, but for people who take blood thinners the cinnamon ingredients are harmful. In many cases cassia cinnamon is the most widely found type and contains coumarin, a compound that is potentially harmful to the liver. In most cases, cinnamon appears not to have adverse effects on the body unless used in excessive amounts beyond the medicinal amounts typically found in foods. The likely cause of the adverse effects of cinnamon is the oil contents in cinnamon is allergic reaction to the mucous membrane and irritation of the skin (Dugoua et al 841).
Assessment
Cinnamon is also advertised as having an instantaneous impact on the lives of diabetic patients. However, a study conducted by Khan et al (3217) on thirty women and men, shows that the changes are gradual and higher doses have a bigger impact, but there is no mentioning of the appropriate dosage. Over time, there was improved glucose control, which in turn helped to control diabetes. The placebo group chosen did not have significant changes in their cholesterol and...
