A Critical Analysis of Jane Eyre

Introduction

Jane Eyre is a Victorian novel depicting the journey of a poor girl from misfortune to fortune. She has to travel to many places and overcome many barriers to stand in a society that does not allow orphans to live dignified lives. The story portrays the familial, social, economic, and emotional pressures a person encounters while changing internally and externally in search of happiness, contentment, and peace. Jane opens her eyes as an orphan in her aunt’s home, which she leaves for Lowood in quest of destination. After that, she leaves Lowood for Thornfield and Thornfiled for Moor unless she returns to Thornfield and finds peace and happiness to live peacefully forever. The entire story of the girl presents her fighting her internal and external conflicts like anxiety, the need for love, religion, and society, which drive her character’s change. She comes to an age when she receives everything she waited for and deserved in life. The novel depicts the story of a poor Victorian girl who comes to knowledge from ignorance after completing the journey of her life, emphasizing the value of faith in God and the reversal of fortune with many internal and external factors that contribute to the change of the character unless final recognition of reality.

Jane’s Internal Conflicts

Jane Eyre’s inner conflicts, like anxiety and uncertainty, lead to her character’s growth from ignorance to knowledge. Born as an orphan and brought up by her cold aunt, Jane’s mental well-being has been challenged since she was a child. Later in her life, she feels insecure when she identifies her love for Rochester in Thornfield. The author has personified her anxiety and uncertainty in Bertha, who cannot control her animal-like instincts and accept her fortune as the wife of a financially fortunate man: “If I lived with you as you desire, I should then be your mistress” (Bronte 463). The breaking of marriage due to Bertha shows the peak of insecurity Jane possesses and is sufficient to lead to catastrophic consequences. As a result, the protagonist
