In the story “A River Runs through It”, love is portrayed in diverse ways, showing the character’s personalities, and the sincerity they have towards each other. Love is a powerful emotion that can manifest itself in numerous ways. According to Maslow, love is a basic human need that must be met (Hopper 2). Love, like water, food, and shelter, is an emotion that individuals need daily. This document explores the diverse ways in which love can be shown, ranging from the five love languages to demonstrating love through religion, love for our land, and helping others. Understanding these different avenues of expressing love can enhance our relationships, strengthen our sense of belonging, and create a more compassionate society.
In the 5 types of love languages, there are words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving gifts. There are distinct examples of each love language represented in the book. A fitting example of words of affirmation is when Paul, and Norman express their appreciation and love for their dad and how they thought he was the best at flyfishing. Those words gave the dad a reason to keep taking them fishing because he knew they looked up to him for his talent. In real life, those who value words of affirmation over other love languages are similar to the father who valued the words said to him. These people value the nice and motivational words that are uttered to them, and these words act as a drive for them to keep going in life, especially when they are facing difficulties (Boozer 5, Joh). However, it is important to remember to avoid making negative or insulting statements to those whose love language is words of affirmation because
