Reading Assignment – Followership
Northouse and Kellerman take a deep dive into the concept of followership to break from the norm of other scholars. They portray how important the role a follower has in organizational behavior. According to Northouse, followership can be understood as a scenario where an individual submits to be influenced by others, in this case, the leaders, to achieve a common goal (467). Quite a huge number of followership styles have emanated from the different typologies, as stated by Northouse. The different typologies have been named after the initial proponents, including Zaleznik, Kelley, Chaleff, and Kellerman (Northouse 471). The most recent typology for leaders, put forward by Kellerman, describes followership from a subordinate point of view, with the different levels of management that a follower has ranging from isolate, bystander, participant, activist, and eventually diehard (Kellerman 3).
Another important aspect I gathered from the readings comprises the theoretical approaches used in the description of followership. According to Northouse, the two theoretical approaches are reversing the lens and the leadership co-created process. The former focuses on the relationship between the leader and the follower, placing the leader at the upper hand. In contrast, the latter conceives followership as a symbiotic relationship (482-483). To weigh in in the debate about the different approaches, I agree more with the proponents of the leadership co-created process because as much as the leaders need the full cooperation of the subordinates, followers also do need the cooperation of the leader. In this sense, leadership is created through the acts of both the leader and followers. Just as there are good and bad leaders, it is the same case with follower. Given that there are bad followers too, I believe leaders ought to equip themselves with strategies to identify and handle bad followers because they can portray unwelcome behaviors that do not conform to organizational values.
Leaders and followers mutually exist in an organizational setting, and it thus becomes hard to talk of one without mentioning the other. The specified readings touch on some elements of leadership despite mainly dealing with followership....
