Comparing and contrasting theme of death in two stories
This paper compares and contrasts how two writers have handled the same theme. In particular, the paper examines the way that both writers have expressed the theme of death. The paper compares how Glenda, a woman, died in the short story by Julio Cortazar’s We Love Glenda So Much and how a young boy named Paul died in Rocking-Horse Winner by D. H Lawrence. In comparing the handling of the theme of death by the two writers, this paper will focus on the characters, including why and how they died.
One death is because of murder while the other one was by accident
The first difference is that in Julio Cortazar’s We Love Glenda So Much, the death happened because the person killed by other people whereas in Rocking-Horse Winner by D. H Lawrence, the person died as a result of an accident. In Julio Cortazar’s We Love Glenda So Much, which is basically a story regarding fatal perfectibility, the person who died was killed by others who were her fanatics. The story comes to an end the moment the fans of Glenda Garson, a movie-star, connive to murder her so as to polish the image of this movie-star which stabilizes their devotion. In the final paragraph of this short story, her potential killers state that “we loved Glenda Garson very much that we would give her one final unbreakable and sacred perfection. On the untouchable heights to which we had raised Glenda in adulation and adoration, we would save her from the fall, her faithful could continue exalting her without any decrease; a person does not come down from the cross alive” (Cortazar 42). These final lines of the story illustrate an essential sacrifice to cultish heroism; the ritual cannibalism of Glenda’s celebrants. The expression of their love to Glenda means the death of Glenda Garson, and the end of Glenda both as a character and as a narrative. This narrative might be a cautionary story with regard to loving the beloved to death.
This is different from the death that occurs in Rocking-Horse Winner by D. H Lawrence which was essentially as a result of an accident. In this narrative, Hester is a woman who is not happy and she feels that her family lacks an adequate amount of money. Paul, who is her son, becomes strong-minded and resolute to end his mother’s dissatisfaction and unhappiness by betting on horses to get cash. This boy thinks that whenever he rides his rocking-horse, he will obtain knowledge of the horse that would win the horserace. Paul later on makes a bet on a particular horse an...
