Importance of Ethics in Civil Engineering
Ethics is said to be the moral philosophy that recommend the concept of right and wrong behavior for all professional in any profession, Composed of metaethics, normative and applied ethics. Metaethics is concerned with the origin of ethical principles and meaning focusing on the universal truth relating to ethical reasoning and judgment. Normative ethics are the moral standards set by society in regulating right from wrong, and applied ethics refer to debatable and controversial issues regarding societal norms (Hanssen and Zenobia.). Therefore, the code of ethics enhances professionals in the said field to adhere to standards that regulate the right and wrong conduct. Canon 6 of ASEC ensures that engineers act in a manner that upholds their integrity, honor, and dignity of their profession, and zero tolerance to corruption, bribery and fraud.
Engineers have to uphold to ethical principles not tolerate corruption through the following ethical guidelines. A profession or a business that is fraudulent or unethical in nature is prohibited for engineers to engage. Engineer ethical codes deter them from engaging to unlawful business or contracts that are unethical in nature, and have to engage in transparent and legal contracts.
