The female lead characters in Shakespeare's Fuenteovejuna and the Merchant of Venice play critical roles in developing the play's plot. In Fuenteovejuna, Laurencia is the leading female character, and Portia is the leading female character in the Merchant of Venice. These two characters, although in different plays, have some similar traits that are easily noticeable. Laurencia and Portia are strong and courageous characters because they both stand to fight for what is right. Laurencia moves the people to fight against the Commander, who is in control of the town of Fuenteovejuna. The Commander brutalizes the people, and he also tried to rape Laurencia.
