Short Entry for Anthropology Reading – Food and Culture
The main points to take away from the articles are as follows; first, the distance between the source and consumption of food has increased. Essentially, due to globalization and opening of trade markets, food produced in one country might find its way to a further country for consumption. Farms are mostly operated by immigrants, single mothers and widows who work longer hours and have no alternative source of funding for their families. Moreover, some of the food production jobs are dangerous and due to lack of insurance plans and health benefits, the little wage they receive does not suffice to maintain them.
In the last three days, I have consumed rice, meat and bread. Before the readings, I took the production as an easy task and thought the products were from my vicinity. However, I now understand the toils that farmers go through to make farming a success. With the long hours, hard work and sacrifice, they are able to feed a lot of people.
