As I mentioned a bunch of times in class, in order not to limit your creativity, I have been trying to leave the specification of the class paper/project as flexible as possible. Nevertheless, I'll try to offer some examples here of some of the ways other students have satisfied the class paper/project in the past.
Many students decided to write a 15-page paper on a topic that inspired them from the class. Some students made videos. Some students created artistic pieces (including performance art) and then explained in writing the relationship with the intention of the class paper/project (note: the above list is not intended to be exhaustive).
The intention of the project (and the main criterion for the grading) is for you to find your own unique way to express something that deeply inspired you from the class about the grandeur of this universe we live in.
It may help for me to offer some thoughts on how I have personally been able to nurture my own inspiration throughout my life. One of the themes of “Beauty of Physics” that I tried to emphasize was the importance of never losing your enthusiasm and curiosity as we progress throughout life. Rather, find new ways to keep nurturing and developing it. It is the key to your originality and to your success, and, I believe, to much of your happiness.
Asking the right questions is as important as finding the answers. Often the germ of the solution is already evident in the question itself. Never be afraid to ask questions. There is no silly question, only the silly attitude of some who did not have the humility to admit our "ignorance" and our inability to fully answer some of the truly profound questions.
So open up your eyes and ears. Put out your antennas. And most of all, open up your mind to the world and to the wisdom gained in the past. Open up to the minds of others near you and to the inner voice within you. Hopefully it will help guide your way by telling you where your strengths and weaknesses are.
If you are excited about being a scientist, then you have many opportunities here in Chapman’s Schmid College of Science. Try to develop your potential and talents to the utmost so as to contribute to your family and to your society. If you think something is important, never give up, even if the subject or question seems too difficult. Keep trying to use all the resources you can bring to bear.
Exercise the muscles of your mind just like an athlete exercises his or her muscles. In the process, you will grow and expand your willpower as well. Much more important than the specific solution to any given problem is the confidence you gain in the process of trying to solve it. Finally, I found that it is often much more exciting to pose the new subjects and problems in the form of a paradox. While this is particularly easy in physics, I think that in some properly generalized form, it can serve as a paradigm for learning in general. By emphasizing the aspects of the problem that are particularly unclear, we can make the situation look as paradoxical as possible and thereby arouse our curiosity and bring to bear the power of our mind in order to resolve it. And the deeper the sense of puzzlement or mystery, the higher will be the peaks of enjoyment in the resolution. As a byproduct, you too will learn much more. This is the essence of active learning.
Finally, as specified in the original class syllabus and in lecture notes, the class paper/project counts for 30% of the total grade. Grading follows the usual letter/percentage guidelines previously specified, i.e.: "

Possibilities of Time Travel and Parallel Universe
Parallel Universes
Time travel and the parallel universe are some of the most fascinating scientific theories. Parallel universe means the idea that another universe exists at the same time as ours, and with similar people performing similar activities concurrently or universes with different people and events in different times. Time travel refers to the idea that people can travel back in time and see how life used to be a few decades or centuries ago. The universe is too huge even for the strongest periscope to view all of it. It contains neutrinos, photons and countless particles that are clumped into countless galaxies. It is estimated that each galaxy has more than one trillion stars which are dispersed across the cosmos in a sphere of approximately 92 billion years. Although most people believe that earth is located at the center of the universe, but that might not be true since there is very little information on the nature of the universe. Similarly, the idea of time travel is far from reality since no one has ever travelled back in time. But it is important to assess different notions and theories that argue its possibilities.
Although some of us believe that the universe if finite and that is the reason we cannot see anything that stands in a specific distance, the real reason why people cannot see things that are in particular distances is because the universe only exists in its present state for a finite period. According to (Vallikkodi, Udhaya Sankar & Vishnukumar, 23). The universe did not remain constant in time or space, but instead it evolved from a state that was clumpier, cooler and diffuse compared to modern day universe. The more we look back in time, the universe appears to be getting much smoother and with less-evolved galaxies. Looking into later periods, galaxies are more massive and bigger, with greater distances between them and older stars. The later galaxies also consist of more groups and clusters separating them from each other. Some of the characteristics caused by the evolution of galaxies over time include a richer universe that consists of many generations of stars, leftover radiation coupled with an ultra-cold background, more limit on how far people can go or discover.
The limit to our intergalactic viewpoint dictated by the distance that light has been able to traverse since the onset of the big bang. However, the idea does not rule out the possibility that there are other universes apart from ours. There are theoretical and observational arguments that suggest the existence of more universe past what humans can see (Deutsch, David & Michae, 12). A finite universe would provide several clues that enable us to determine that earth does not exist in an infinite space. Scientist would conduct experiments to measure our special curvature and discover that the universe is shaped like a sphere and if it moved in straight line in one direction, it would get back to its starting point. They could the go forward to search for repetitive patterns in the sky where a similar object can be seen simultaneously in different areas. The can also measure the density, smoothness and temperature to understand how the imperfections occurred over certain periods. If the universe existed as finite, we would note various properties that are intrinsic to the left by the big bang and the fluctuations in temperature that got displayed. However, we can only see a different set of patterns showing us that it is impossible to distinguish the universe from being infinitely immense and perfectly flat.
It is impossible for us to distinguish the real nature of the universe from being flat and infinitely immense if all an observer can access is a portion similar to a small backyard. It is also impossible to measure the curvature of earth since the portion in which the observer stands cannot be distinguished as a flat surface. Judging by the quota of the universe that is viewable, it is right to state that if indeed the universe curves back on itself and is finite, then it must be several millions of times the size of the area that we can see and with no limits going upwards. Hypothetically, the implication of people’s observations creates an even more tantalizing image (Allen & Roland, 17). Scientists can reverse the big bang backwards to when the universe was in an expanding state, hot and dense and discover that it could not have gotten infinitely dense and hot during that period. Reasonably, before long ago back in time, another phase before the big bang, phase that set it up and caused the occurrence of the universe that we can see. That period was full of energy instead of matter and radiation, the universe had energy that was inherent to space and one that made the universe to enlarge exponentially.
In a universe full of radiation and matter, the rate at which the universe can expand reduces over certain periods as the universe losses its density. However, if the energy is inherent to space, the density should not reduce but stay the same even when the universe continues to expand. In a universe full of radiation and matter, the rates of expansion would slow over time, and far of points retreat from each other as speeds slow. However, with exponential increase in size, the rates would not drop distant places would incrementally get twice as far away, followed by four times and so on. The expansion of the universe did not continue in the same fashion over time, it only happened over a certain period the ended and enabled the beginning of the big bang. A good explanation of the inflation is a ball rolling downwards form the highest point of a fairly flat hill. As long as the rolling ball maintains its location at the area near the top of the peak, it is supposed to continue rolling slowly as it inflates, making the universe to enlarge at an exponential rate. Once the rolling ball gets to the edge of the flat hill and into the valley, inflation stops. As it wavers back and forth in the valley as its almost sopping, the rolling tendency develops the energy gotten from the inflation to dissipate and changes into radiation and matter. As the inflation ends, the big bang begins.
However, the inflationary state does not begin everywhere at once or end everywhere at once. Each subject in the universe is caused by strange quantum laws of reality including the inflation. When considering that line of thinking, some ideas emerge, including the notion that inflation is not like a ball but is like a wave that is subject to spreading as times change like a quantum field. Over periods of time, and more space arises owing to inflation, some regions have chances of seeing inflation end while in others, it continues for longer periods. Another notion is that over time, two regions that have witnessed the end of inflation are not likely to meet or collie due to the dynamics of expansion. The areas where inflation continues will expand between them, an action that will cause pushing of the unmoving universe further apart from each other. There are numerous things that have not been discovered about the inflationary state. There are no documented statistics showing how long the inflation continued before it finally stopped and necessitated the beginning of the big bang. We also don’t know whether other universes are connected in some significant way and whether each universe play by its unique rules and do not affect one another un any dimensions.
The notion of a parallel universe is that the interpretation of quantum mechanics in different worlds may have a place for the alternate realities. It is possible that there are other universes existing in the same period. Similarly, there is a possibility that people in the universes are the same as people on our universe except that each individual made one critical change that discontinued the aligning of event in the two parallel universes. For instance, a person gets two jobs in the same industry and probably similar salaries, one in the home country and one in a foreign country. The individual chooses to take the oversees job and therefore, discontinues the aligning of events between them and their twin partner in the parallel universe, or where an individual stands up to a bully instead of letting the bully harass then and facilitate aligning of events in the parallel universe. Maybe it is just a dream to think of a parallel universe, but for the aligning of events between two individuals in the parallel universes, things that are unknown about our universes must get researched and specific and realistic answers gotten.
To begin with, inflationary state was there before the beginning of the big bang bust have existed for not only an extended period, but an infinite period of more than 53 billion years to allow for multiple trillion universes like our own to appear. That is a great number of universes however, if the number is not greater than the number of possible results, then it is not considered to be gigantic enough to facilitate the possibilities of parallel universes. It is estimated that there are 1090 particles in the universe, and it is required that each particle should contain the same history of interactions from the beginning of the big bang in order to multiply our universe. We can compute the odds and assume that the particles have 13.8 billion years to interact and then pose the question, what are the possible outcomes tha...
