The main sub-areas under criminological enterprise include criminal sociology, criminal biology, criminal policy, penology, criminal psychopathology, victimology, criminal Phenomenology, criminal etiology, and criminal psychology. Criminal Sociology is a branch of criminology that studies social elements of an individual that leads him or her to commit a crime. Criminal biology is a branch of criminology that examines how human biological aspects can be used to detect crime (Britto & Reimund, 162). For instance the use of DNA test and use of fingerprints to get biometric data of criminals like robbers. A criminal policy is a branch of criminology that studies measures that can be taken to contain illegal activities. The sub-area studies how resources can be efficiently allocated to the criminal department to deal with crime.
Penology analyzes various types of punishments that can be used to deal with crime. Penology enables criminologists to assess the level of crime committed and match it with appropriate punishment. This branch also studies the rehabilitation process for criminals through prisons.
