The Song dynasty was divided into the Northern and Southern Song, but too much focus on Confucian bureaucracy led to inefficiencies in comparison to the previous dynasty (Adler & Pouwels 245). Improvement in agriculture technology helped increase food output, while gunpowder, typography and the compass were also important achievements for the Song dynasty. The Latin West was less developed than Song dynasty and Muslim civilization because it had weaker political systems, smaller cities, relied less on trade and had inferior technology. However, Latin West was catching up with both the Song dynasty and Muslim civilization, as increased interaction with Byzantium and evolvement of the commercialized economy led to increased wealth in Latin West.
