Americans undertook efforts to resolve the problems that arose in the nineteenth century as a result of modernization and industrialization. These efforts were reforms sought to address the negative political, economic and social implications of industrialization in the twentieth century. Progressivism garnered support of the immigrant workers, accomplished leaders in finance, and native urban middle and upper classes of professionals such as lawyers, social workers, teachers, and professors. Its main aim was to attain equity and provide opportunities for the underprivileged members of the American society including the recent immigrants in the period between 1890 and the 1920s (Hedberg 1).
The movement gained popularity because efforts the progressives fervently campaigned for of the desire to alleviate the suffering of the migrant workers and against increased political corruption in the cities. Workers lived in impoverished conditions in slums and worked in unsafe conditions. The progressives also became popular because it was mainly composed of white middle and upper social classes that had a voice in the society (Hedberg 9).
Progressives uncovered the poor sanitation, lack of fire hazard, inadequate privacy in bedrooms and bathrooms which often resulted in moral indecency. It resulted in one of their major successes because their reports informed the enactment of the Tenement House Act in 1901. It addressed the improvement of the poor living quarters of industry workers. It required building of tenements in larger areas to reduce overcrowding and enhance ventilation, adequate lighting and toilet facilities (Hedberg 17).
