Describe two major obstacles Louis Riel faced in his fight for democratic rights.
Louis Riel was a famous Canadian politician who was the leader of Metis and the founder of Manitoba province who lived between 1844 to 1885. He was a staunch leader who led different resistance movements against the Canadian government. He was ready to defend the Metis' rights against the Canadian government. Through these movements, he negotiated terms with the Canadian government, where he successfully incorporated the Manitoba province into the Canadian Confederation. Riel faced serious obstacles in his fight for democratic rights during the 19th century. The two major obstacles Riel faced were division within the Metis community, which he was in charge of, and opposition from the Canadian government.
The Metis community was rebellious since not everyone accepted the leadership of Riel. Some saw him as a dictator and took advantage of his influence to oppress others. Different leaders within the Metis community had different interests and perspectives and therefore saw Riel as a threat that hindered them from doing what they deemed favorable to their side. The effort to unite these people came with huge opposition due to the regional divisions, as people wouldn’t agree to speak in one voice and defend the rights of everyone. The division within the community led to disputes within the region since the Metis were spread across various regions.
