Social Movements in the United States
During the 19th and 20th centuries, movements arose with the aim to fight for the rights of workers. Although the aim was genuine, the groups did not largely succeed. One of the main reasons why they did not succeed was the failure to include African Americans in the labor unions. This paper will focus on some two of the reform groups.
The main reason for the rise of the progressive era and labor movements was industrialization. Industrialization led to the rise of laborers. In most cases, these laborers were manipulated by their employers. The goal of the employers was to maximize profits at the expense of the workers. Due to the mistreatment at work, workers came together and formed labor unions. However, due to widespread racism, African Americans were not adequately represented in labor movements.
Moreover, the reformers advocated for the enactment of laws aimed at ensuring safety and protecting labor rights. They campaigned for the establishment of legislation prohibiting child labor reducing working hours, and ensuring wages. Alongside this, they endeavored to enhance working conditions and create opportunities for workers to voice their concerns by forming labor unions.
During this period, labor activists were instrumental in advancing the interests of workers. Prominent individuals like Samuel Gompers, who established the American Federation of Labor (AFL), spearheaded labor movements aiming to secure wages and the right to engage in bargaining.
