Government as a Moral Enforcer
Moral principles are an important aspect of any country or society because it ensures that all citizens can live in unity by following the appropriate set standards. As equal citizens, all individuals can thus understand the importance of individual and collective rights. Consequently, the citizens choose their leaders to form a representative government based on their ability to enforce the rules in the country and uphold its beliefs. Such moral and ethical standards can thus be implemented through agencies in law enforcement and the judiciary, which have delegated powers in government (Applbaum). Therefore, the government has an essential role in upholding justice and maintaining order by enforcing morals.
An important aspect of any government involves the morality of duty which sets up the basic requirements and rules to be followed by each member of the society. These are non-negotiable aspects that must be fully followed to ensure that society has order and that individuals can conduct themselves with decorum (Langlais and Obidzinski). As a result, appropriate interventions and penalties are put in place for individuals who contravene these set requirements to ensure continued compliance. Therefore, laws are put in place to compel individuals to always follow the right path towards achieving the best version of society. More so, the concept of punishment comes into play when one breaks any of the set laws.
Governments are mainly set up through three distinct and separate entities that include the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. The roles of each arm are clearly defined, with the legislature tasked with creating appropriate laws and regulations and the judiciary involved in the interpretation of such laws. Consequently, the concepts of legal morality and justice prevail on the basis that there must be laws that are to be followed by all citizens of a country (Congleton). This means that all citizens must be informed and be aware of the enforceable laws to be able to maintain order. More so, the individuals tasked with administrating such laws must also serve as an example by following and applying them at all times. Therefore, when applying legal morality to individuals, it is assumed that an individual of reasonable age is capable of fully understanding and conducting themselves in a responsible manner. Further to this, an individual can thus be held accountable and answerable in instances where they are found to be at fault. This is, therefore, critical for any form of justice to be served in society.
