Impacts of COVID-19 on Sports
The recent COVID-19 pandemic had multiple adverse effects on various sectors, including transport, manufacturing, education, tourism, and sports. Most governments adopted mitigation measures such as lockdowns, restricted movement, and social distancing, which altered routine operations in various industries. In sports, for example, the reliance on a fanbase was halted to limit the spread of the virus. Leitner and Richlan confirm that football/soccer across Europe played most of their 2019/2020 matches without fans in the stadium because their presence violated the mitigation measures, including social distancing (221). This is based on the fact that the virus was contagious. As such, close proximity to an infected individual and disregard for measures such as wearing masks and vaccination was likely to increase the spread of the virus that had claimed thousands of lives globally. COVID-19 has negatively affected sports and exercise.
The sports industry’s revenue from selling tickets for live match attendance reduced considerably. Most sports teams did not make sales from transactions on drinks and food because the law compelled them to embrace COVID-19 mitigation measures, including social distancing, including “nobody within at least six feet of your seat (Traub).” In fact, in some instances, sports events were canceled altogether, signaling the loss of revenue and impeding overall athlete physical and mental health. According to Collins et al., canceled team exercises and sports activities, especially for high-school student-athletes, hastened the risks of dejection, anxiety, and anger.
