Reaction to Fredric W. Hafferty's Cadaver Stories and the Emotional Socialization of Medical Students
Emotional socialization forms part of the hidden curriculum. It is a dynamic process that involves an array of social practices (embodied and verbal) through which caregivers mediate community-relevant ways of interpreting and expressing emotions (Cekaite and Ekstrцm 1546). Medical students who handle cadavers as part of the learning process experience a form of emotional socialization based on cadaver stories, as documented by Hafferty. The current paper is a reaction to reading Hafferty's work: Cadaver Stories and the Emotional Socialization of Medical Students.
Article Summary
Cadaver stories are narratives that describe jokes played by medical students on each other or lay individuals (Hafferty 348). Often, these jokes are directed at unsuspecting, emotionally vulnerable victims. For two reasons, the stories involve the physical and symbolic manipulation of cadaver parts or whole cadavers. The first role is to shock the intended victims, and the second role is to generate humor from the victim's distress or shock. According to Hafferty, cadaver stories circulate freely among medical students are often considered actual occurrences. Thus, the paper's central purpose is to examine the conditions under which cadaver stories are told and the functions of these stories.
Reaction
My initial reaction after reading the paper was that medical students, through cadaver stories, have found a way to debunk inherent cultural or religious fears or stigma associated with death or cadavers. For most people in the general public, seeing dead bodies or interacting with dead bodies is often accompanied by a cringe.
