The quest for holistic wellness has promoted the research on the sustenance of the well-being of both the body and the mind. The body and the mind have been conceived as parts that people can train to enhance their performance and, therefore, their health. As a result, researchers have proposed several training techniques for the functionality of the body and mind. Thus, exploring the body and mind connection emerges from the belief in holistic wellness and the need for effective techniques to facilitate body and cognitive health.
Some professionals argue that the state of mind directly corresponds to the state of mind. While a poor cognitive condition generates bad bodily health, a good cognitive state promotes a good one. Diverse researchers indicate that emotions have a discernable impact on body wellness. A sustained state of fear or emotional stress makes the body vulnerable to certain diseases (Rimer). The negative emotions alter the biological system promoting wear and tear that paves the way for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. In particular, chronic anxiety and anger alter the heart’s electrical stability (Rimer). The effect promotes body inflammation and compromises the functionality of the heart.
On the flip side, a 2007 study demonstrated that good emotional states characterized by enthusiasm, hopefulness, vigor, and diligence minimize the risk of coronary heart disease (Rimer). The dual aspects exhibit the significant influence exerted by cognitive health on bodily health. As a result, an effective health program should promote the two forms of wellness. Disregarding one form of health diminishes the targeted form. For instance, patients under medication will register a low recovery rate if they are in depression. The exploration of the connection is significant for health provision.
Similarly, the state of the body influences the cognitive state. Gomez-Pinilla and Hillman argue that the environment easily influences the mind. The brain modifies itself to align its structure and functions according to the registered influences from its environment and experiences. In this context, the brain recognizes the alteration in the normal body function and becomes modified to reflect the registered changes. What is good for the body is necessarily good for the brain. One of the techniques that researchers have historically identified as beneficial to the body is physical exercise. Thus, physical activity has become central in connecting the body and mind health.
Research has since compiled numerous cognitive health benefits that accrue from exercising. Kravitz indicates that the new findings add to the benefits of physical activity for overall health. Stakeholders have already established aerobic exercise and resistance training to be essential in preventing and managing diverse physical health conditions (par1). Similarly, they project cognitive health problems to be driven by physical activities. Interestingly, if experts prove the brain and mind connection, physical activity’s appeal for body health simultaneously improves cognitive health. It is probably the registered effects that generated the hypothesis in the first place.
