Once you choose a key concept, you will write a 3-5 page paper on this area. You paper should include the following:
1. Background- what is the topic and how can it enhance performance. Be specific in this section. Why is it important to learn about this topic for future professionals in sports science? How is it that using this topic, or its understanding of it, can improve performance in sports? Be sure to include the details of what you learned in this class, such as: key terms, techniques, and concepts, or theories covered.
2. Application would you implement this concept into a skill or technique within a specific sport or performance area? When would you use it and how? Be specific on what domain you will be using this for. For example, will you be using this for your: sport/athletics, performing arts, military, or academics? Then, specify how you will use this concept within the domain and what specific part. For, example, if you are using "anatomy"- you will need to pick a sport and describe how this fits into a technique or movement part of that sport. For example, a track and field athlete- you will discuss for example, the sprinting technique and how the major muscles (structure) fit into to this. Such as the three hamstring muscles.

Sports psychology is a central component of sports science that researches very fine mental and emotional aspects that heavily influence sports activity performance. It strongly influences athletes based on the realization that success in sports is not just about physical strength but about motivation, confidence, focus, managing stress, and goal setting (Robazza and Ruiz 14). One of the key reasons this branch of sports psychology is important to any future professional in the field of sports science is how it can facilitate specific insights into the minds and behaviors of athletes in training and competitive situations. Awareness of these psychological dynamics helps coaches, trainers, and sports psychologists focus interventions to optimize performance and mental robustness in athletes.
Some of the concepts learned in this class include intrinsic motivation as internal drives and personal goals and that extrinsic motivation for external rewards or recognition is essential in influencing the drive and commitment of an athlete. Belief in self-efficacy involves believing in one's ability to be successful in specific situations, and this belief can have a significant impact on performance outcomes (Shoxrux,). Arousal regulation involves the process of keeping arousal levels at an optimal state to allow performance. At the same time, visualization refers to the fact that athletes mentally go through rehearsal of the movements and scenarios, all in the interest of improving execution.
Another interesting learning is that goal setting acts like a blueprint of action among athletes in which they focus their energies to realize specific goals and milestones. Attentional focus is relevant in that it helps in sustaining concentration, thus distributing mental resources efficiently and effectively during training and competition. Some strategies used are imagery rehearsal- that is, visualization of an athlete self-model performing optimally; cognitive behavioral intervention in consideration of negative thinking patterns; stress management through various techniques for relaxation; and self-confidence and resilience through self-talk (Noetel et al. 145). Those specific principles of sports psychology help athletes develop mental toughness, handle intense pressures, focus and concentrate, manage emotional feelings, and generate well-being. Integrating mental training in physical conditioning significantly helps athletes better confront adversities, successfully handle setbacks, and perform at the top of their level for much longer periods.
These athletes embrace sports psychology, both for improved performance in the field and for essential life skills that go well beyond sports. According to Shoxrux, the discipline and self-awareness gained through sports psychology could play a crucial role in molding the path toward personal growth and the successful lives of an athlete at large. In brief, sports psychology forms a foundation in the general development of an athlete by equipping them with relevant psychological tools that can help them soar even after active sports.
