Mental skills enhance performance, increase enjoyment and achieve self-satisfaction if applied effectively. Arousal regulation allows any person to adjust their energy and focus to match the requirements of any task or activity. Individuals come across different emotions and improper arousal levels when dealing with various situations in their daily routines (Hosseiny & Mousavi, 2022). The assignment explains the mental skills and their application as a regular part of your performance training.
Background
Arousal regulation is applied in different domains to help people achieve the best performance, such as sports, public speaking, academics, and performing arts. Various techniques and practices are used to reach a state of calm and focus to achieve successful outcomes. Excessive arousal triggers anxiety, nervousness, lack of concentration and stress. At the same time, insufficient arousal causes boredom, low energy, and lack of motivation. Arousal regulation was derived from early psychological theories and studies on impaired performance (Grønset et al., 2024). It was first used within sports and performance contexts, making it one of the most important mental skills for regulating mental health practices. Today, arousal regulation is one of the most important mental skills widely used in psychological and physical health therapy.
Arousal regulation is a mental skill that controls alertness and emotional intensity. It ranges from deep relaxation to extreme enthusiasm. The level of arousal depends on the situation experienced by the individual. The management and regulation of these emotions are essential from physiological and psychological perspectives. It helps achieve utmost performance, uphold focus and control anxiety (Gould & Udry, 1994). Arousal regulation has a powerful impact on the enhancement of performance, increase in enjoyment level and accomplishment of self-satisfaction. It can enhance performance by improving focus and concentration, reducing stress and tension, improving reaction time and responsiveness, growing confidence level and improving physical coordination through controlled movements. Arousal regulation can also improve enjoyment levels by enhancing focus on the present moments, creating a better emotional connection to the activity and experience, and providing positive reinforcement (Vella-Fondacaro & Romano-Smith, 2023). Individuals can achieve self-satisfaction by optimizing their performance and achieving personal goals by controlling their emotions, mind and body.
Using arousal regulation as a mental skill can allow me to overcome a mental barrier I am recently experiencing, i.e. performance anxiety in public speaking. I undergo feelings of arousal where I am nervous, have high anxiety, swift racing thoughts, and a rapid heart rate. It becomes difficult for me to stay calm and focused during public speaking.
