Reflection: Reading and Writing Skills
Introduction
Our ability to think critically about issues is what helps us evaluate accuracy and truthfulness of what we read, claims, and statements. Reading and writing demands critical thinking than everyday life. In readings and writing, critical thinking is the difference between failure and success. It is only in reading and writing where we must consider information critically, ask questions, and arrive at unbiased conclusions. Examining assumptions, skepticism, uncovering perceptions and biases, and challenging reasoning is the basis of good reading and writing culture.
Reading and critical thinking skills
The vital reading and critical thinking skills learned during the class include analytical thinking, problem solving, analysis and inference skills. Through text such as “Always Optimizing” by Jia Tolentino, “Selection from love 2.0” by Barbara Fredrickson, and Daniel Gilbert’s “immune to reality” I mastered the skill of analysis and inference. I learned to develop a thesis, enrich arguments using quotes, keywords, and phrases. Also, through the select texts, I was able to understand facts, grasp a deeper understanding of their ideas and perceptions, and form intelligent opinions about love and happiness. Another key realization is that one can think critically about a text only when one has understood it.
