Excel Academy Charter School is a tuition-free charter school in Irvine, California. The charter school has a population of 1187 students, 54% minority students, and 32% economically disadvantaged, with equal numbers of boys and girls. The school’s mission is to provide a flexible and tailored learning experience by bringing together parents and teachers to offer academic brilliance and social and emotional basics that instill the desire for learning in students (“Excel Academy charter school handbook.”) The school also envisions empowering students by promoting learning, independence, flexibility, and empowerment. The school utilizes a personalized learning curriculum tailored to each student’s uniqueness and learning situation. The choice of school to take one’s child has grown in popularity, growing the debate on whether to take one’s child to a traditional or charter school. I would not take my child to Excel Academy Charter School as they do not perform better; they are highly discriminatory and offer poor working conditions to their teachers.
I would not enroll my child in a charter school because they do not offer better performance. As independent schools that cater to smaller numbers of students, such as twenty students per class in the case of Excel Academy, the one-on-one interaction with teachers should ensure that students perform better than their counterparts in traditional schools. However, according to Jamel and Affolter, only 25% of US charter institutions surpass the performance of conventional schools in reading and 29% in math. Also, 56% of charter schools did not enhance students’ reading growth, and 40% did not improve students’ reading. Furthermore, 19% of these schools performed poorer than traditional schools in reading and 31% in math (Affolter & Jamel 1).
