Creative Essay- Second century A.D Rome
The time machine has had unintended consequences as we were forced to stay much longer in Rome than was anticipated. Second century A.D Rome is surprisingly advanced than I had imagined, and differences with the modern world are glaring. The art, history, social events, philosophy, religion are all different compared to modern life. Even as the journey was intense, I am comfortable in modern life. People in Rome had to do many things by hands, and followed similar routines, while mostly interacting with the people who spoke their language. On the contrary, it is easier to communicate with people of different backgrounds and even use translators. The support for art and architecture in Rome was mostly for aesthetics, and some of the creations did not have functional values.
So in an attempt understand how the Romans worshipped we looked at the various sculptures that connected the gods and goddesses to the Roman beliefs. Of particular interest is reverence of Isis an Egyptian goddess that had also been adopted by the Greek. The ownership of a foreign deity was not out of place as the people sought a more traditional worship form of worship where there are deities. The divinity of Isis was related to the concept of eternal salvation and restoration of life. I was surprised to learn that Roman and Greek religious beliefs were closely intertwined. I was intrigued o how Greek mythology found a prominent role in Roman belief and religion. To Sheldon, the modern world offers endless possibilities, but he seems dismissive on the accomplishments of the Romans. The idea of a gods and deities is one that has been of interest to man since the ancient times, and even before emergence of Christianity in Europe it is surprising that mythology played such a prominent role in the Roan society influencing the art scene.
It is noteworthy that the art and architecture of the Roman Empire in the 2nd century A.D/C.E mostly focused on realistic depictions. This was particularly for the sculptures and portraiture that dominated the Roman region. There is history in the sculptures, based on the choice of materials used from stone, marble, bronze and marble, with overrepresentation of Greek sculpture replicated by the sculptors.
