We behave differently toward different people and supporting characters help the audience see different sides of the protagonist. The most obvious example would be Rear Window where Jeff and Lisa are revealed in their neighbors. We can think of supporting characters as planets orbiting around the main character(s). Those characters, ultimately, help us see more clearly and help to reveal the main character(s) to us. Pick, any of the films/stories and explore this idea. Supporting characters as reflected in the video games, books, plays television, movie, and radio shows or in other media applied in storytelling. Supporting character is credited with adding revelations on the main character. This is affected by adding a form of relationship with the main character. There are cases where the supporting characters assist the main character develop a complex ideology that is solved mutually. There are times where the supporting characters may take the roles of the main characters; this is prevalent in continuous materials, such as series. Supporting characters enhances and supports the plot of the story; protagonist represents the principle character in a fiction. This paper identifies with the Shawshark redemption, a screenplay by Frank Darabont.
Shawshark redemption is a movie based on novella. Stephen King as seen in the movie is a strong and powerful character. The drama is based on numerous years of coverage among a number of supporting characters. The theme of the movie resonates with preserving and instilling hope considering the hopeless situations.
The principle character Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is circled in events that are testing in nature (Darabont). The events are presented in styles that reduce and crash the spirits of the ordinary man. The intensity of hopelessness captures the audiences and Red (Morgan Freeman), a supporting character, to a point that it seems there is no point of return. Andy Dufrense reenergizes himself and escapes from the Shawshark prison. This comes as a surprise to Red (Morgan Freeman) and to the audiences, as well.
