Business situation
In 2003, Boeing developed the 787 Dreamliner, an innovative design that emphasized value-creation to passengers and airlines compared to its old Boeing planes (Tang et al. 73). However, the 787 Dreamliner was produced using an unconventional supply chain never used before in the airline industry. Even though perceived to decrease production time from six years to four years and reduce the development cost from about $10 to $6 billion, this strategy was the greatest failure in the supply chain history (Tang et al. 75). Studying the Boeing case allows us to uncover the fails in the supply chain and what companies can do to avoid such risks.
Analysis and Insights
The 787-supply chain embraced outsourcing as a strategy in cost reduction and manufacturing time and spread financial risks of aircraft development among suppliers. While the unconventional supply chain presented the company with great potential in as much as cost and development time are concerned, it exposed the company to several supply chain risks that were earlier inexistent in the 737 supply chain model.
