In Adélaïde Labille-Guiard’s Self-portrait with two students, the artist shows her image, and two female students looking attentively. Marie Gabrielle Capet and Marie Marguerite Carreaux de Rosemond were themselves painters (Met Museum). Labille-Guiard has a palette on her left hand and lap and holds a painting brush on her right hand while the canvas is hidden from view. The paintings’ subject is Labille-Guiard’s role as a teacher who taught fellow female painters in her studios. Labille-Guiard is in a light blue satin dress and a feathered hat. The artist positions the three women wearing elegant clothes, reflecting femininity, elegance, and female artists in French society.
