Terrorism and insurgency are quite familiar terms in the political and international relations arena and they are both scary phenomena. Although a clear-cut definition of the term terrorism remains subtle, it can simply be understood as the violent acts perpetrated by organized groups against the civilians and are often politically motivated (Paul and Nelson 2016, p. 164). Insurgency, on the hand, is an umbrella term used to refer to the several strategies that organized groups employ to undermine and eventually overthrow a ruling political faction, terrorism being one of the approaches (Paul and Nelson 2016, p. 164). The most common terrorism acts in the contemporary era have been fueled by the availability of terror groups and ethnic and religious differences.
