To what extent are the soldiers sent to save Private Ryan depicted as believing in the value of their mission in the film Saving Private Ryan
Any battle is fierce, and sometimes the soldiers find it too much and even wish to retreat. The soldiers in the movie Saving Private Ryan are not any different. However, they show a tough side of not abandoning and committing to their mission. But to what extent do they believe in the value of their mission to save Ryan? The plot of the film has specific instances represented by different angle shots, dialogues, and the camera pans, among others, that adequately convince us that the soldiers were committed to the value of their mission. The mission was worth it!
The film begins with a fierce battlefield between 0:02:45 and 0:08:16. The camera uses medium shot, which is basically from a medium distance from the actual scene. This presents the audience with the severity of the war where the soldiers are engaged. We can also see a close-up shot or zoom-shot at 00.02:59 of one of the soldiers, who appears to be exhausted by the battle. The soldiers are caught up in a tough fight that takes the lives of many of the troop soldiers. The soldiers were aware of their duty as soldiers that they are supposed to fight the enemy and ensure the lives of American nationals are safe even if it means giving up their lives. They, however, do back down because they swore allegiance to put their work ahead of everything. It is between 0:09:14 to 0:09:16 that we learn through a zoom-shot of his backpack that it was the troop that Ryan's brother belonged. Ryan was among those ambushed and killed seen by his body, and others lying in water turned red by blood. The impacts of the war can also be seen on the dead fish that have been washed to the shore through the zoom shot between 0.09:14 to 0:09:16 (ClickSubLike, 2020).
The mission to save Ryan looked like a simple mission at the beginning because the soldiers thought Ryan was in a nearby small town that would be easy to take over and save him, but it turned out to be the opposite, as seen in the action between 1:13:15 – 1:21:26. During the scene, the editor also uses the eye-line match technique to show the audience what the actors are looking at. It is an excellent way of showing the audience the environment and condition of the action. In addition, between the beginning and end of the film, the editor has also used the montage technique to condense space, time, and information. This assists in developing the story in the film.
Soldiers show commitment to the mission when they do not abort their mission but opt to continue risking their lives ...
