Sound, Culture, Society: Sound Analysis Of A Specific Event

Essay Instructions:

A written sound exercise – 1,500 words. You will be asked to analysis a specific event or place (e.g. a sporting event, concert, demonstration, if choosing an event; a particular part of a city, community, or set of buildings, if choosing a place), focusing on its acoustic properties and the acoustic events taking place within that space and period of time. This will have to be more than just descriptive: it will have to deploy – and demonstrate a firm grasp of – ‘acoustemological' analytical terms, as used by sound theorists and ethnographers, and your analysis will have to be embedded in a broader discussion of the implications of your findings.

This is weighted as 30% of your overall module grade.

For this assignment, in addition to the usual range of academic assessment criteria (see below), you will be required specifically to demonstrate a firm grasp of key acoustemological terms and techniques of analysis.
