COVID-19: Impact on Post-Pandemic Society
COVID-19 has marked a historic watershed in human history. This is evident everywhere, across all societies and national borders. The shock, or pause, COVID-19 has introduced worldwide is still unfolding. Indeed, many, including world leaders, are still processing what is happening. The scale and severity of impact make COVID-19 an unprecedented moment in human history. This is perhaps ideally captured by Justice Malala (2020) in an insightful piece on leadership efforts in South Africa to contain COVID-19. The impact of COVID-19 could, indeed, be identified in a post-pandemic society along economic, social, psychological and personal lines.
Economically, COVID-19 has already ravished economies. This is evident, yet not limited to, unprecedented job loss at rapid rate, business closure, economic slowdown and, not least, enormous stimulus packages. These developments are projected by many commentators to set in motion irreversible changes in world economies. For developed economies, one can clearly see governments scrambling to contain COVID-19 fallout in order to avoid further chaos. So far, economic forecasts are dim at best and recovery appears to be a distant hope. This economic spiral down has far-reaching consequences for developed economies including,most notably radically changed economic measures and, ultimately, just as radical changes in economic behavior and consumption.
Socially, COVID-19 has made social distancing a norm.
