Nathaniel Bacon was a landowner in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1675. In this era, free whites lived in extreme poverty, and indentured and enslaved white people occupied the lowest social hierarchy in the plantation systems. There were also wealthy planters, such as the Burgesses and the governor, who created policies for the colony. Bacon's rebellion is credited to numerous causes. First, people had received news about the war in New England. In addition, there were economic problems brought about by extreme weather, huge expense and high taxes. Despite the rules, there were dispersed fighting between the Doegs and colonist and other tribes along the frontier. As a result, Nathanial Bacon and other men residing near the fall line of James River became scared of the possibility of Indians attacking them. Bacon requested the governor to provide an army to secure the colony from Indians, but Berkely dismissed him.
