One of the prime differences between a web application and a SaaS application is the way in which they can be accessed and interacted with. On the one hand, a web application may be accessed via the internet or the intranet and interacted with through the browser. Some examples of the most common web applications are (1) online forums, (2) social media (i.e., Facebook, Twitter), (3) email programs (i.e., AOL, Gmail), (3) online banking platforms, and even (5) eCommerce (i.e., Amazon). In most cases, web applications are already a complete suite of applications. For example, social media sites like Facebook are already stored on a remote server and interacted with through the internet browser. Thus, when you open these social media, you access them through the web browser itself, which does not need any additional applications.
On the other hand, although a SaaS application may be accessed through the internet, such access is from a third-party entity or supplier. This is because, as compared to a complete suite, SaaS applications are usually sold as software applications (and used as a software distribution model) to their end users. Some of the most common examples of SaaS applications are (1) Zendesk, (2) Zoom, (3) Hubspot, (4) Salesforce, and (5) Netflix.
