UPS stands for an Uninterruptible Power Supply system. It is a device that acts as backup in case of a blackout, and allows devices connected to it to safely shut down in cases of prolonged shortages. It can be connected to servers, network systems, personal computers and even entertainment equipments. It is also used to correct over voltages, acts as a filter for line noise as well as stopping power surges as Tripplite (2012) states. There are different types of UPS that offer comprehensive protection against all power problems as discussed below.
A Standby UPS system is connected to equipment and power gets to the equipment after going through surge and noise suppression circuitry. Meanwhile, the internal battery is kept charged by the battery charger and is ready for use. When there is power problem the inverter converts the stored power to a sine wave output. Switching from AC to battery power happens swiftly without causing disruption. When power resumes it switches back to AC and recharges the battery (Tripplite.com, 2012).
