Describe in your own words the idea of quantum computing and its uses, and how it works
Quantum computer is a type of computer that uses quantum mechanics. A computer that uses quantum mechanics is more powerful and efficient that the normal regular computer. A quantum computer uses qubits unlike the classical computer that uses bits. An advantage of using qubits is that data and other operations can be expressed in more than one state. I.e., for classical computers operations narrow down to bits which are expressed in 0s and 1s. In quantum computers, the state of a qubit can be both in 0 and 1. The main use of quantum computer is to perform operations that normal/classical computers would take a very long time to compute.
Describe 3 examples of milestones predicted for quantum computers.
Quantum supremacy - this is the point at which a quantum computer can do calculations beyond the reach of today’s fastest supercomputers. Quantum computers are said to have reached the supremacy milestone if they can perform an operation faster than the fastest supercomputer. Already this milestone has already been reached.
Discuss IBM’s new computer, what can it do and how is IBM’s quantum computer different from Google’s quantum computer?
The core differences between Google’s quantum computer and IBM quantum computer is their qubit capacity. Google’ quantum computer has 53 qubits CITATION Emi19 \l 1033 (Connover, 2019). Secondly, recently Google announced that its quantum computer has achieved quantum supremacy. It is a claim discredited by IBM over the benchmark Google used. IBM claimed that Google underestimated the power of its supercomputer claiming that it would take 10,000 years while IBM held that it would take 2.5 days. Nonetheless, Google claims that their quantum computer only took 200 seconds to perform the calculation and thus qualifies their device to have reached quantum supremacy. IBM has not claimed that their machine has reached quantum supremacy yet.
