As you work your way through this material, you will undoubtedly find yourself wondering why we decided to lump these two topics into the same module of this course. IT services is a general philosophy of organization of IT management, while cloud computing is a rather specific set of solutions to some not terribly well-defined problems; solutions that remove from the organization both costs and responsibilities. Often, cloud computing appears to be a solution in search of a problem. The reason why we've chosen to combine them here is because, as you would've noted from the sources, the proponents of cloud computing often herald it as a particularly strong instance of the IT services approach. At a stroke, it removes from the organization the responsibility of managing all that technology, presumably leaving users completely in charge of the IT products which will be generated by the new external providers. Of course, it also removes from the organization control of its information future and even of its basic data in many cases; it also can cost quite a lot of money which disappears into the services sector rather than into the hard assets category. While clearly confiding your IT management to cloud-based providers reduces the influence of technologists relative to that of information users, it is considerably less certain that users are always better served in the cloud then they would be if they kept their old techno-geek folks still chained in the basement to the old mainframe.

Cloud computing defines a group of highly demanded but sophisticated computing services. These services were initially offered by providers such as Microsoft, Amazon and Google but on commercial basis (Marks & Lozano, 2010). This computing technology denotes a model where computing infrastructure can be viewed as a “cloud”. Under this technology, individuals and business enterprises can easily access applications from anywhere place globally. Initiators of this technology had the idea of coming up with a model that offers computing, storage and software as a service. It can also be defined as a parallel and distributed system of computing that consists of a collection of virtualized and interconnected computers, dynamically provisioned and presented as one or more unified resources in computing. The resources must be based on a service level agreement that should be reached through negotiations between the service provider and consumers.
While utilizing this technology, consumers and businesses can access and use various applications from a common server. In addition, cloud computing utilizes and depicts characteristics of various technologies that include automatic computing, virtualization, utility and ground computing. With grid computing, several computers are interconnected to form a network, hence being utilized together to generate supercomputing resources. With this network of computers, large and complex operations can be performed efficiently (Hugos & Hulitzky, 2011). Moreover, these computers can be located at different positions. In utility computing, the concept is based on the pay per use model. This is whereby the cost of offering these services is based on the usage by an individual or an organization. With this technology, cost can be based on the amount of data utilized, per user basis, or even hours per day. However, it has been pointed out that pricing while dealing with cloud computing can be quite difficult and the mode of pricing can be determined by the service provider. Automatic computing on the other hand is a technology that was introduced in 2001 by IBM (ERNST & YOUNG, 2011). Under this concept, in case of a hardware failure, computers in a system can correct themselves automatically without any human intervention. This is achieved through transference of programs running in a faulty computer to another network. Finally, under virtualization technology, users are set to access servers and storage without knowing a specific server or storage details. This is the case due to the presence of virtualization layer that executes user’s requests in relation to the computing resources. This is possible through accessing the appropriate resources. In addition, when the server utilization in a data center is low, virtualization is a crucial technology in improving the rate of utilization (Hugos & Hulitzky, 2011).
Currently, most of the organizations have come up to support and embrace the utilization of cloud computing technology. Researchers have also come to accept the fat that cloud computing will not only change business organizations positively, but will also transform various business models. However, for this goal to be achieved, business organizations must have an insight of both benefits and risks related to cloud computing (Marks & Lozano, 2010). In addition, both the technology and organizations must comprehend how cloud computing can be utilized to align itself to changes in consumer expectations and habits.
