World Politics:Should Prefer a Friendly Dictator or Hostile Democracy?

Essay Instructions:

On Pages 182 and 183 in Chapter Four, the authors ask if we "should prefer a friendly dictator or a hostile democracy?" We often stress the importance of promoting democracy around the world but in a country where there are interests that are contrary to ours and those of our allies, should we accept a more autocratic leader (a dictator) that might ignore those views if it benefits him/her to do so? What are the pros and cons of doing so?

The idea of a friendly dictator has always been received with mixed feelings. Some feel that we have fought long enough for democracy, and it must be guarded at all costs. Others feel that democracy may derail a leader since it is not always to have all the people having one will (Frieden et al., 2019). Trying to balance the different needs and interests of different people may derail a democratic leaders' ability to progress smoothly. In all fairness, it is better to have a friendly dictator than to have a hostile democracy. What matters is whether the quality of life of citizens is improved or not. It would be true to assume that citizens' quality of life is better when they have a friendly dictator as opposed to a hostile democracy.
