Democracy has been heavily criticized since ancient Greek times, and it has played a vital role in the current democracy and its functions. Through the modern era and the beginning of classical antiquity, democracy has been linked with rule by the majority, rule by the people, and free election or selection through elected representatives or direct participation. Ancient philosophers and political thinkers have encountered critiques of democratic political systems from different ideologies. People who critiqued democracy have always wanted to showcase democracy's limits, paradoxes and inconsistencies by comparing it to other systems of governments, plural voting, or aristocracy (Finley, 2018).
