You will be asked to provide the background and history of the program, along with information outlining the use of Restorative Justice. Finally, you will create an interactive multimedia presentation that includes a restorative activity that is utilized at the selected program. Proponents of restorative justice understand that the conventional techniques of identifying and managing crime are becoming less effective. The Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY) is a program aimed at transforming the lives of community members through restorative justice as a new approach to justice and crime management. Background and History RJOY was started in 2005 in Oakland, California to address systemic disparities. Fania Davis who was a civil rights attorney started the program to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline in Oakland at the time. The program also focused on addressing racial inequalities that were linked to crime in Oakland. The mission of the program is to reduce youth incarceration by building healthy and inclusive communities. The program has overcome a range of milestones that include the initiation of pilot programs in Oakland and reduced the rates of student suspensions by 74% in 2010 (Creducation, 2024). In 2013, RJOY collaborated successfully with local law enforcement to incorporate restorative justice into Oakland’s juvenile justice (Community Initiatives, 2024).
