In the United States, the current political party system is a two-party system controlled by the Republican and the Democratic parties. The two-party system is where two parties from opposite sides of the political divide compete in general elections. Both can dominate government posts, either individually or in an alliance. For over 150 years, these parties have alternatively dominated every national election in America, controlling the government.
The system is stable because it fosters centralization and enables political parties to establish common policies that appeal to a broad range of voters. They are easier to rule, with less internecine strife and more cohesion, since small disruptive parties are discouraged.
