Over the years, mental illness has been discussed traditionally using various perspectives. The most applicable ones are the medical model, the deviant approach, and mental illness as a myth. This paper focuses on the three medical models that have been repeatedly used to understand mental disorders and will explain why the medical model applied by George Engel is the most practical model for diagnosing and treating mental disorders.
In the medical model of mental illnesses, mental illnesses are equated to physical diseases with a significant focus on biology and neurology as the roots of their occurrences. This paradigm of symptom-based diagnosis is the mark of medical intervention medications such as pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. One of the greatest strengths of the medical model is its capacity to integrate empirical research into the framework that makes mental health understanding and intervention more portable and reliable. This is not only to accelerate the approval of lifesaving medications but also to promote the idea that mental issues are just as important and should be addressed as other health conditions (Farre & Rapley, 2017; Kornblum & Seccombe, 2021).
However, the medical model still faces criticism due to its oversimplification and inattention to the psychosocial aspects. The psychologist George Engel presented the so-called biopsychosocial model in the 1970s as a reaction to this opposition. Engel reproached reductionism, where diseases appeared to be the sole physio-chemical outcomes. He instead leaned on interactivity, enabling the person's psychological and social qualities.
