The Arab Spring Student’s Name Institution The Arab Spring While the Arab Spring occurred in 2011, its social and political effects are experienced still today, about eight years later. The Arab Spring refers to a series of protests and uprisings that swept across North Africa and the Middle East majorly in 2011. The countries that were marred by major pro-democratic protests include Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Libya, and Yemen (Simonsen & Spindlove, 2013). Before the uprisings, these North African and Middle Eastern countries were characterized by dictatorial regimes. The Arab Spring began in Tunisia when a vegetable vendor has set himself ablaze after police had seized his selling stand. The incident sparked street protests in Tunisia and eventually, other Arab nations followed suit. This paper examines the Arab Spring and its impact on terrorism with a key focus on Libya. After the series of protests across the Arab nations, you would expect positive changes socially and politically. The uprisings were related, however, the outcomes were different. While countries such as Tunisia and Algeria experienced calm, the case is opposite for Libya and Syria, which have experienced civil wars. Politically and socially, it is deducible that things became worse for Libya following the Arab Spring. Since Muammar Gaddafi was ousted and killed in 2011, there has not been a stable government in the country. With three rival governments trying to fight for control of the country (Abdessadok, 2017), the political temperatures are high. With no stable government, the country is also in a mess socially.
