Comments on Question 7.1: How have elements of culture from your community, and of campus culture, affected your attitudes towards the use of alcohol and other drugs?
Shawn
Shawn indicates that culture plays a vital role either as an influencer to drug addiction or as a modifier of behavior to shun drug usage. Living in a society and family that have strict cultural beliefs coupled with religiosity modify a mindset and behavior of a person to avoid activities that encourage drug abuse. Separately, exposures to a new culture at school and in different working environment help experts to develop compassion for the addicts hence they support various activities and behavior that increase recovery. Shawn uses the knowledge learned from school and different cultural settings to enlighten the society about the adverse effects of drug abuse (Gainsbury, 2017).
Johnny
Johnny reflects both social and cultural as influencers to drug abuse. His African-American culture portrays alcohol and drug use as usual with adults consuming such drugs to unwind. The society knows nothing about addiction. Media exposure also enhanced the use of the drug in the area. Later on, he started using the drugs due to peer influence. The respect in the society, especially among the adults, never ensured conservation hence John could not change his attitude on addiction. He was an addict and spent more time with his peers without knowing the right channel to follow to avoid drug use (Khan et al., 2017).
Courtney
Courtney indicates that poverty, racism, low education levels and other socioeconomic statuses changed his attitude towards drug and alcohol use. The exposure to the negative impacts of drug abuse especially on children changed his attitude to refrain from using drugs. Moving to the south exposed him to a different culture and noted that the effect of drug abuse is similar across the different cultures. Lastly, Courtney indicates that elimination of poverty through proper education would eradicate drug use and other risk factors (Gainsbury, 2017).
Comments on Question 7.2: Special Considerations when working with a client from the low socioeconomic population.
Alfredo
Alfredo mentions some essential facts that a counselor considers when working with a client from the low socioeconomic population. Such factors include cultural background, experiences, education background, attitude, cultural beliefs and demographics concerning the stressors. Besides, he gives his observation of the parents who acculturated in western culture and lifestyle and could not successfully fit into the different cultures and were delusional on how American society works. In conclusion, Alfredo proposed education with college background as a requirement to acquire a type of lifestyle for living in USA (Stevens & Smith, 2013).
I would comment on the different factors highlighted above. One aspect of dealing with client from the low socioeconomic population is cultural intervention.
