The three possible reasons for Marie’s rebellious behavior are (1) broken family structure, (2) emotional absence (or hostility) of the mother, and (3) puberty.
First, one of the main reasons for Marie’s rebellious behavior is the broken family relationship that exists between her mother and father. It was said in the case that both of her parents are engaged in a “cold war” between one another and that this is the reason why her parents usually go on their so-called ‘business trips’. According to the Social Development Theory, a child’s cognitive development is dependent upon the social and cultural factors of his immediate environment. Thus, since Marie sees the fractured relationship between her mother and father, she develops the same attitude.
Another possible reason for Marie’s rebellious behavior is her relationship with her mother. It was stated in the case that Mr Liu has observed the relationship between the two as ‘hostile’. Following the same principles of the Social Development Theory, it could be seen that Marie’s rebellious behavior is caused by the constant anger and frustration that she feels with her mother.
Finally, it could also be said that Marie’s behavior is due to puberty. Marie is a 13-year-old girl, which means that she is an adolescent. Accordingly, based from the Child Development Theory, adolescent children who are aged 12-24 are at high risk of developing rebellious behavior due to a variety of factors which include biological, social, and psychological, among others.
