Social Media Campaign Proposal: Alcohol Use and Abuse Among Active-Duty Military Personnel Ages 18–30
Alcohol consumption and abuse is still a serious issue among active-duty military members who are in the age group of 18-30. Studies indicate that young military people are exposed to work-related stress, trauma, and harsh working conditions that predispose them to heavy or binge drinking (Hitch et al., 2023). Research also indicates that military operations and deployment cycles may cause alcohol consumption as a coping strategy to address mental health challenges including PTSD, anxiety and depression (Kolesnichenko et al., 2025). Miller (2024) also mentions that alcohol misuse is increasingly becoming a concern among younger service members and tends to have long-term health, behavioral, and job-related outcomes. Due to the normalization of alcohol in most military settings, young troops do not obtain early assistance, and dangerous trends increase in strength (Osborne et al., 2022). The current proposal aims to decrease the risky drinking habits of active-duty military personnel aged 18-30 by developing a specific social media campaign with supported evidence-based interventions and digital tools.
Social media networks are the best means of reaching out to young adults who are mostly in the military and spend a considerable amount of time online associating with their relatives and friends. Studies indicate that young populations are particularly appropriate to receive digital interventions as they minimize the stigmatization aspect, are simple to access, and promote interaction (Monarque et al., 2023). Instagram is the platform of choice in this case since approximately 70 percent of young adults aged 18-29 use Instagram at an average of one hour every day, which makes it an effective communication platform among the youths in this age bracket. Also, Instagram will allow short videos, stories, and private messaging and can be used to pass health information in a brief and confidential way. The visual and fast-paced communication is also popular among many military staff who do not have much time to spend and have organized timetables. The Instagram usage will enable the campaign to post short informative videos, anonymous polls, resource links, and testimonials of other service members. Because digital messaging devices have been effective in assisting the military staff to decrease alcoholic habits (Aycock et al., 2024), a social media platform such as Instagram will enhance the capacity of the campaign to communicate and impact the target audience.
The social media campaign will be developed on the platform of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) evidence-based model that is demonstrated to decrease unhealthy alcohol consumption (Kane et al., 2023). SBIRT is oriented on early risky drinking identification, providing brief motivation messages, and linking people to treatment no earlier than in need. This method is suitable to the military setting where the rate of help-seeking is usually low. The other evidence-based approach that will be useful in this campaign is the use of mobile or digital interventions. It has been found that behavioral programs, which are conducted through text or online, make military members more motivated to change their drinking habits (Aycock ...
