Write a short letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Social sciences. Assignment
QUESTION 1
Matters of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality are often in the public eye, and tend to be at the center of many passionate (and unfortunately even violent) conflicts. While discussing diversity in the context of institutions and organizations remains important, it is as important to ask to what extent we accept diversity and difference as a society. One such case occurred August 11th, 2017 when a white nationalist group marched in protest of the potential removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee from the campus of the University of Virginia. Local organizations such as the NAACP and citizens of the town had argued that the statue (erected in 1924) needed to be removed as it was a symbol of the enslavement and oppression faced by blacks in the South. Using the knowledge you've accumulated in this course, write a short letter to the editor of your local newspaper making an argument either for or against the removal of the statue from public view, and how your standpoint is in the interest of cultivating a more diverse society. Try to make your response around 500 words, and use at least two concepts from the course to discuss this topic. This is not an opinion paper. Write it as a sociology student, putting forth your best academic knowledge on the subject.

A truly saddening and unfortunate event that has once again sparked the intense debate about whether these so-called “symbols White Supremacy” should be removed or not from the public view. Although the arguments of each side have their merits, I believe that it would still be best if such monuments remain and simply “improved by adding more detailed explanations” CITATION For17 \l 1033 (Fortin, 2017). The reason why I believe that such monuments should remain rests on two primary reasons, namely; (1) the existence of intersectionality and (2) the prevention of ‘reverse racism’.
First, I believe that removing the statue would be ineffective in curbing systemic racism these days, especially considering the fact that intersectionality exists. It is a common misconception among people that discrimination solely exists in one aspect of society such as race, gender, or class. Rather, we must be aware that discrimination happens in multiple planes of society with race only being one of them. Accordingly, considering the fact that the statues are said to be merely symbols of racial discrimination, then I believe that removing them would not be a cure to discrimination that could happen between differences in gender, class, age, or even race itself.
In fact, I believe that removing these ‘historical pieces’ would be a disrespect to the plights, struggles, and achievements of those who were oppressed d...
