Child-Centered Play Therapy Since children’s cognitive development occurs faster than language development, they rely on playing to communicate their awareness about what is going on around them. Toys allow children to transfer their guilt, fantasies, fears, and anxieties. Since the child is not pressured to change, play theory can help a child to grow and develop (Landreth, 1993). This approach is especially practical for children with depression, regressive behavior, abuse, physical handicaps, dependency, and learning disabilities Landreth (1993) suggests that play process leads to a relationship characterized by acceptance and understanding which encourages the children to start thinking about new possibilities that could not have been possible on reality, allowing the children to express themselves better.
