Essay Instructions:

(15%) (Length expectation: ~750 words)
With this assignment, you will take the first step towards building your own research proposal. Guidance for developing your research concept can be found in the Week 1 and Week 2 Study Guides. Make sure to be in communication with your professor as you formalize your ideas, to ensure that your research concept is sufficiently rigorous, relevant, and feasible.
In your development of your research concept, make sure to use the outline provided. At a minimum, you need to address the following points:
Create a working title for your research
Develop a problem statement
Articulate your research objectives and questions
Identify your research approach in general terms
Identify the hypotheses/expected outcomes of your proposed research
Plan out a timeline for your research project in the form of a Gantt chart*
**For this first assignment your timeline need only cover the stages of your research project at a general level. For instance, you do not yet need to describe the various sub-components of your data collection and data analysis (e.g., the six stages of a thematic analysis). Instead, you can focus on these broad categories. Note that for your final proposal you will need to include further detail.

Modern Social Media Protests
Problem Statement
In the recent past, there has been an explosion of modern protests fighting for equality and justice. With COVID-19 being a pandemic that has influenced limited physical movements, activists' legal aids have flocked on social media to share their opinions and air their grievances on various social and political issues (Wiederhold, 2020). Although social media protests are not new, they have emerged as an essential aspect of influencing social and political actionCITATION Sim21 \l 1033 (Bunse, 2021). The increased use of social media shows to manage the tremendous impact of COVID shows the innate power of social media to make a significant change. Furthermore, Jost, Barberá, Bonneau, Langer, Metzger, Nagler, & Tucker, 2018 highlight that social media protests are causing drastic changes in the political and social realm. Drawing from these changes, there is limited literature on how social media protests have revolutionized the fight for justice and equality.
Research Objectives
The general objective of this research is to explore the role of modern social media protests amidst the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. This will be accomplished by addressing the political participation and police brutality issues.
Determining the change, modern social protests have had during the COVID-19 pandemic
Determining the role of modern social protests in fighting police brutality
Defining the role of modern social protests in political participation and social networks
Research Questions
What are the impacts of modern social media protests on society?
What change has social media protests had on police brutality?
What change will modern social media protests have on political participation and social networks?
Research Approach
While there has been an eruption of modern social media protests in the recent past, there are no substantial insights on the impact these protests have in shaping change in politics and social injustices (Pinckney, 2020). The research will focus on critical social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, which offer relevant insights into how social media protests shape political and social issues. This research will contribute to a growing body of research committed to studying social media protests during and post COVID-19. In this light, it is critical that the research draws insights from credible sources and ensures that the data gathered covers different aspects necessary to develop comprehensive conclusions. This research will be accomplished through a mixed-method research method to collect extensive data from diverse sources.
This mixed-method research design systematically integrates qualitative and quantitative research methods in a single investigation. Using this methodology allows consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Through this method, the researcher will collect, analyze and integrate qualitative and quantitative research to better understand the issues under study and draw credible and reliable insights (Pole, 2007).
Hypotheses and Expected Outcome
Modern social media protests are increasingly being adopted as a solution to the impact COVID-19 social distancing measures have influenced on society CITATION EGi21 \l 1033 (Gilbert, 2021). The rationale for conducting this research is anchored on the premise that there is limited literature on the effects modern social media protests have made in political participation, police, and brutality amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Conducting this research will educate the masses on the importance of participating in modern social media protests. It will also shed light on social media's potential to influence and shape political action profoundly. Furthermore, findings from this research will contribute to the growing body of research on social media platforms' role in driving activism and seeking justice.
