Based on the American Counseling Association (ACA), professional counseling entails a relationship that empowers diverse families, individuals, and demographics so that they can accomplish education, mental health, career goals, and wellness (American Counseling Association, n.d.). In Pennsylvania, the following are the professional counseling licensure requirements. Licensed professional counselors are expected to apply their knowledge and skills to facilitate human development by evaluating their mental growth so that they can enhance proper mental health adjustment to treat and prevent behavioral, mental, or emotional disorders that are associated with stress. In that light, for an individual to be considered a professional counselor in Pennsylvania, one must be a holder of a doctoral or master’s degree in counseling. Only degrees from accredited educational institutions are recognized. The examinations needed as a prerequisite for individuals to obtain a counseling license include the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE), the North American Association of Master’s in Psychology (NAMP), and the Board Certification Examination (BCE) (Kaplan & Gladding, 2011). For a holder of a master’s degree, one should have around 3,000 hours of supervised counseling experience between 2 and 6 years. For a doctoral degree counselor, 2,400 hours are required of supervised counseling experience, which about 1,200 should be obtained after the issuance of the doctoral degree.
