These are cultural diversity, privilege, oppression, and social justice, the definitions of which can be varied in many different ways, based on the experiences of an individual and a community. These concepts demonstrate that a person or community can experience both privilege and oppression. It becomes evident that privilege and suffering frequently coexist in intricate and difficult ways. Social workers require sense of such complexity to treat the diverse populations in an ethically appropriate way. Examination The case subject is a woman, of Irish descent, middle-aged, white, and college educated, who lives in a mainstream white predominant community in Chicago. She is a divorced lady having 2 children. This affects her perception of the family, community and her identity. Her history brings some sense of cultural belonging, social stability and economic security. But it can also further impact her cognition of larger social matters such as diversity, privilege, and justice. Application The definitions of cultural diversity, privilege, and social justice do not apply to a person as they do in the broader community. Culture is generally thought to refer to those traditions, languages, and values that hold a people together. The society is not only heterogeneous with respect to race and ethnicity but also in respect to religion, sex, sexuality, and even class. While the neighborhood mix in Chicago is very diverse and heterogeneous in daily life, it is also marked by inequalities that separate neighborhoods on economic and racial lines. Privilege can be seen in the wider sense of access to benefits like shelter and education, and safety. Privilege can be seen in Chicago through the notion of affluent, predominantly white neighborhoods and under-resourced, predominantly communities of color. In the United States, privilege is associated with systems that benefit particular groups: white, middle-class, able-bodied, or English-speaking; other groups are disadvantaged.
