Arab and Muslim Americans encompass a diverse ethnic minority in the United States. A lack of understanding about these populations has aroused uncertainty in regard to the identities of Muslims and Arabs. Being Muslim entails practicing Islam as the religion. As a Muslim, learning some basic Arabic is of the essence since the primary language of Islam is Arabic. On the other hand, being Arab means you belong to an ethnolinguistic group that identifies as Arabs and speaks Arabic as their native language. Arabs have the right to religion, and they can be Muslims, Christians, or Jewish.
The practice of the Islamic faith should project one's submission to God. The religious practice is based on five aspects known as arkan, to which all members should adhere. These include faith profession (shahada), daily prayer (salat), giving alms (zakat), fasting (saum), and hajj to Mecca. The Arabic culture places emphasis on family, traditions, honor, religion, and hospitality.
